Wedge Wire Screens: V-Profile Slots, Construction and Selection

Wedge wire screens use shaped profile wires, often with a V-like cross-section, joined to transverse support rods. The surface creates long, controlled slots rather than woven openings or punched holes. Cylinders, flat panels, baskets, and intake screens are common forms in water treatment, process filtration, pulp and paper, food processing, and other separation duties.

Why profile-wire slots are different

The slot is commonly narrower at the working surface and opens inward between support rods. This geometry can help reduce bridging and supports cleaning in suitable applications. Actual performance still depends on slot width, profile geometry, support spacing, material, flow direction, pressure, contamination, and the complete equipment design.

Build the specification around the process

State material grade, slot width, profile-wire and support-rod geometry, screen diameter or panel size, length, end connections, open area, flow direction, required finish, and inspection requirements. A nominal slot by itself does not define a complete screen. For a cylinder, connections and roundness may be as important as the slot; for a panel, flatness and support design may control installation.

Selection and acceptance

Select by the material to be retained, fluid properties, cleaning approach, pressure or load, corrosion exposure, and downstream use—not only by a product name such as “Johnson screen.” Confirm slot measurement method, product identity, surface condition, connections, roundness or flatness, packing, and traceability where applicable.
